Penetrating Keratoplasty

Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK), also known as full-thickness corneal transplant, is a surgical procedure in which the entire damaged or diseased cornea is replaced with a healthy donor cornea. It is commonly performed for conditions such as advanced keratoconus, corneal scars, infections, or degenerative disorders that severely impair vision. The surgery involves removing a circular section of the patient’s cornea and stitching the donor graft in place with fine sutures. PK can significantly improve vision and corneal clarity, although recovery may take several months and requires regular follow-up to monitor for graft rejection or complications.

  • Full-thickness corneal transplant surgery.
  • Replaces damaged cornea with healthy donor tissue.
  • Indicated in keratoconus, corneal scars, infections, and degenerative diseases.
  • Involves suturing donor cornea to the host eye.
  • Can greatly improve vision and corneal transparency.
  • Recovery takes months with close monitoring.
