Ocular foreign bodies

Ocular foreign bodies refer to any external objects that become lodged in or on the eye, such as dust, metal shavings, wood particles, or insects. They can affect the cornea, conjunctiva, or deeper ocular structures, causing irritation, redness, tearing, pain, and blurred vision. Superficial foreign bodies may be removed easily, but deeper or penetrating ones require urgent medical attention to prevent infection, scarring, or vision impairment. Proper eye protection during activities like grinding, welding, or woodworking is the most effective way to prevent such injuries.

  • Commonly caused by dust, metal, wood, or glass particles
  • Can be superficial or penetrating injuries
  • Symptoms: pain, redness, tearing, light sensitivity, and blurred vision
  • Risk of infection or corneal scarring if not treated promptly
  • Removal may involve irrigation, cotton swab, or surgical intervention
