Anterior Vitrectomy Surgery

Anterior vitrectomy is a microsurgical procedure performed to remove vitreous gel from the front (anterior) portion of the eye. It is commonly indicated in cases where vitreous has prolapsed into the anterior chamber, often due to a posterior capsule rupture during cataract surgery, trauma, or certain lens implantation procedures. By removing the vitreous from the anterior segment, the surgery prevents complications such as retinal detachment, cystoid macular edema, and chronic inflammation. The procedure is typically done using a vitrectomy machine with a cutting probe and infusion system, ensuring minimal traction on the retina.

  • Definition: Surgical removal of vitreous gel from the anterior chamber.
  • Benefits: Safer recovery, reduced post-surgery complications, improved vision outcomes.
  • Risks: Infection, bleeding, retinal detachment (rare), increased eye pressure.
  • Postoperative Care: Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops, follow-up visits, activity restrictions.
